Senior Stories: Your Super Power in Quality Service Provision

Senior Stories: Your Super Power in Quality Service Provision

Over the last few years I’ve worked with various government departments and independent service providers here in the ACT as they navigate their way towards the NDIS system – by facilitating digital storytelling workshops seeking stories around questions including “What makes a better life for you?” and “What does ‘home’ mean to you?”. Each organising looking for a way to engage their community in the new client-led service environment and of course looking for new ways to attract clients.

Lately, I am also being approached by service providers in the aged care sector looking to engage older Australians in the changing service environment, primarily in regards to focus moving from compliance to quality service provision. The success of NDIS-related stories demonstrates the similar opportunities for the aged care sector.

By asking current clients open questions (with a specific purpose) service providers have the opportunity to:

  • Collect research data into what defines ‘a quality life’ for clients;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to person-centred service through the delivery of an empowering story seeking process;
  • Create a suite of authentic promotional material (usually 6 x 3 minute videos per workshop) that gives a peer-driven voice to your client community.

Their individual stories become your community’s story

Real-life stories can inspire dreams, ideas and hopes in the viewer thus educating them on the opportunities available to them in the transition from compliance to quality service provision (not in industry lingo!). Viewers see what is possible when they choose YOUR services. People can smell a polished advertisement a mile off – this is why the PROCESS is equally as important as the outcome.

The story seeking process is equally as important as the short story outcome

A collection of authentic digital stories sourced through a safe & purposeful workshop and screening process provides your organisation with years of options to reference, explore and discuss ways in which the people at the heart of the services can move towards greater sense of quality service for a quality life.

Show your organisation’s leadership
by investing in your community’s voice.

It is my experience in working with seniors that they are like all stereotyped, homogenised groups – consisting of individuals who are unique and at the same time benefit from connecting with others through stories that resonate with their own lives. I believe in the power of being heard – and the power of hearing the stories of others.  Tap into the super powers of your community’s stories!
