Homeshare

Homeshare

Graham Hambleton, Director of Disability ACT recently told me a story of a friend who asked him “So, what does an “inclusive” community look like?” to which Graham gave the wonderful reply “Walk out your front door and look down your street.  That’s what an inclusive community looks like”.

Community Connections have launched a program called “Homeshare” that seeks to achieve that vision of normality.  This program addresses current social issues in Canberra by:

  1. Enabling people living with a disability to live independently (The Householder);
  2. Providing affordable shared rent accommodation (The Homesharer).

I had an unusual goal in making this video – to give it a very domestic look and make it… well…. unexciting. The idea for this is to reflect that ‘inclusive’ model idea in that this Homesharing arrangement is like any other: flatmates negotiate the domestic chores, discover and deal with each other’s likes, dislikes, habits and of course their family and friends.  They make meals, watch TV and hang out.

Peter, Slaven, Sharon & Lauren were great sports in the making of this video and I wish them all the best in their happy households.  And I wish the Community Connections team all the best and hope this video helps explain the idea to potential Homesharers and Householders.
